Permeable Paving Installation Questions

The build-up runs from a permeable sub-base sized by a ground soak test, through an open-graded bedding layer, to the surface material. On Essex clay, the sub-base is deeper than on free-draining ground because clay slows absorption. The exact depth is calculated from the soak test result, not assumed.

A bound permeable surface stays in place, does not scatter onto the pavement, and gives a stable surface underfoot and for vehicles. Gravel is cheaper upfront but moves around, needs raking and topping up, and can be pulled indoors on shoes. For a front driveway, a bound surface is more practical in the long run.

Compacted debris in the joints or surface pores reduces drainage over time. An annual jet wash clears most blockages and restores flow. If drainage is ignored for several years, a more thorough clean or joint refill may be needed. Catching it early keeps the cost low.

Loose gravel has the lowest upfront cost but needs topping up and raking regularly. Permeable block paving and permeable resin cost more initially but need less ongoing attention. The right choice depends on the ground conditions and the finish you want, the soak test result affects which surface is practical on your specific site.
